Any horse or pony, properly conditioned, can compete in endurance. Arabians,Akhal-Tekes, and other desert breeds are popular, and they arguably are the best fit for the discipline, But there are many other breeds out there doing just fine! Morgans, Connemaras, Thoroughbred , Mustangs... You get the idea!
Each ride is divided into two phases. Phase one is a vetgate and health check. No money is awarded for this checkpoint. Monetary awards are given for finishing the race and being awarded Best Conditioned.
At each Vetgate, the horse is checked for soundness, dehydration and their pulse and resperation are taken. Veterinarians check each horse before the race, at the checkpoint and after they finish.
